The Task

An upright position and a controlled, load-stable posture pose a lifelong challenge to our neuro-motor system. The daily struggle against gravity requires a highly coordinated use of the entire postural muscles to create the basis of a stable posture for the performance of even the simplest of movements and maintain this basis as long as possible.

The ability to have an upright, stable posture requires a complex interaction of muscular strength, force-endurance and a fine-dosed usage of the deeper muscle layers such as the intrinsic back muscles and the muscles used for fixation of pelvic- and head position. The individual usually establishes this ability as a child and tries throughout his complete lifetime to optimize and maintain this ability. Since the neuro-motor musculoskeletal system though from the beginning represents an evolutionary compromise for the solution of this problem and is moreover subject to permanent individual adjustments and adaptation requirements for loading conditions and performance, it is not surprising that almost every human develops posture related problems during his life and is requires appropriate therapeutic training interventions.

The Chinese philosopher Confucius (approx. 551 to 479 BC ) analysed the work of human musculature and formed the thesis: “Standing and walking is a permanently supported fall”. To avoid the “fall” our muscles work permanently automatically on the basis of learned posture- and motion patterns against the “fall” and in the sense of a physiological posture and motion
